When I first moved to New York City, I stayed with my distant relative Leo, a Christian Brother, at the San Miguel Brother’s Community in the Riverdale section of the Bronx. Most of the Brothers were teachers or professors at nearby Manhattan College. Brother Michael taught film; his specialty was the horror film. The main house was surrounded by a huge garden and what I remember foremost are the warm afternoons and evenings of my first Indian summer in the US spent there. Ten years later, the Brothers moved out and sold West Hill, as it was also known, to a neighboring high school. Not long after, the high school demolished all buildings and leveled the garden.
